Not the best of weather for climbing, but mostly dry, we only had one shower on route (pitch 3 of 6) and the best (final) pitch almost entirely dry by the time we got there. See pictures below.

I happened to have a spare climbing helmet, which I had been using for caving for some time, but my head torch kept falling off it.

Edelrid Ultra-brightThen I got the opportunity to buy a second-hand Petzl Duo. So I took a hacksaw to the projections, that take the elastic straps, and set about my helmet with a hand drill. This was the result.

It is important to note that drilling holes in a helmet can invalidate the manufacturer's warranty and any EN, CE or UIAA ratings. Therefore modified helmets should not be used as PPE!

Nevertheless it looks good.

Manually operated hand held flash. Here is a photo of it lit up obliquely with a hand-held flash (just to test out my new digital camera with a manually operated flash), it seems to work alight. Digital cave photography here we come!

Gearing up at the bottom of Tarn CragsWe didn't set off till after midday, but the hour had just changed, and the weather was perfect.

We started with a roped scramble, on Tarn Crags, (left).

The rock here very rough as not many people climb on it and as usuall we had the crag to our selves.

The summit of Tarn Crags leads perfectly onto Stickle Tarn, and  Pavy arc (right).

Pavy Arc from the summit of Tarn Crags. There are many routes to go at, of almost all grades. Our route started at the bottom left and climbs to about half way up Jack's Rake.

The close up image (below left) shows us on the belay ledge, after the first pitch. The following pitch takes a traverse across the top of the slab, with some pretty airy positions, for a mod. It's that that makes it one of my favourites!

Removing Gear after topping out onto Jack's RakeView from the top of Pavy Ark.From there you can link other climbs to the summit, or just continue up the rake to the top. As time was pressing on we took the latter option, and were admiring the views from the summit, before the sun set (bottom left).
